James J. Crouch Memorial Scholarship
Brother Crouch was initiated into the fraternity through the Sigma Tau Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in El Paso, Texas, on May 11, 1974. He remained a devoted member of the fraternity for 44 years until his passing in 2018. Brother Crouch proudly served as a Veteran in the United States Army for 30 years, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer. After his military service, he continued to serve as a civil servant for another 30 years, achieving the highest civilian rank among African Americans in Fort Bliss history.
Known as a sports icon in the community, Brother Crouch officiated over 14,000 volleyball and basketball games at the high school level for El Paso’s Park and Recreation Department and Fort Bliss tournaments. His contributions as a referee earned him induction into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2024, the Mayor and City Council of El Paso, Texas, renamed Ponder Park at 7500 W.H. Burges Drive to James “Jim” Crouch Park in recognition of his significant contributions to the community.
Since 2018, the Sigma Tau Chapter has honored Brother James J. Crouch by awarding a scholarship in his name to graduating high school students.
Hoyt L. Ward Sr. Memorial Scholarship
Brother Ward was initiated into the Phi Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in 1954. He remained a devoted member for 70 years until his passing in 2024. Brother Ward graduated from Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma, in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, specializing in dairy science management. Following graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served until his retirement in 1983 at the rank of Sergeant Major (SGM). His military honors include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense, Army Commendation, eight awards for good conduct, among many others. His service took him on three tours in Germany, two in Korea, and one in Taiwan; he was also stationed in Alaska during its statehood transition.
Brother Ward was a significant influence on many, earning the title of “Our Bridge Builder” for paving the way for numerous Brothers in the fraternity. He contributed annually to fund a scholarship for deserving high school students to support their educational endeavors.
The Sigma Tau Chapter will continue to honor Brother Hoyt L. Ward, Sr.’s name and legacy through an annual scholarship contribution in his honor.
